This February, BGCSM is joyfully celebrating Black History Month, recognizing the past and future contributions of Black people, especially our youth. When young people learn about Black icons and leaders, they’re inspired to dream big.
During Black History Month, we teach our members about history in everything we do, whether it be academics, arts, health, or leadership programs. This year, we have an exciting challenge from our long-time partner, USCellular to explore a new side of Black History Month in their annual Black History Month Contents.
This year, UScellular introduced an exciting new element to the contest. For the first time, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine Members were encouraged to create their original artwork to recognize influential Black STEM icons, including historical figures, world leaders, scientists, and educators. Members were introduced to an array of Black scientists, Mathematicians, Engineers, and Astronauts who were leaders in their fields. After researching, members took what they had learned and created art that spoke to them. "This has been a great way to introduce new STEM leaders to our members and have them express what they've learned through their creativity,” shares Karen MacDonald, Chief Operations Officer.
BCGSM chose ten finalists based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme, and overall impression. The inspiring works can be seen here and will be digitally displayed in USCellular Stores throughout the month.
"This project allows us to highlight the many important voices in Black communities and allows our Club members to see the full spectrum of what it takes to lead us to where we are today," said Luke Van Denend, Program Quality Director. "Art lets us have the difficult conversations we need to have and also to celebrate individuals who are not always in the spotlight."
